From a soldier’s diary with the pencil still attached to John Brown’s pike, the Emancipation Proclamation, a Confederate Palmetto flag, and the leaves from Abraham Lincoln’s bier, Harold Holzer and Eric Foner provide a unique and intimate look at the Civil War through the New- York Historical Society’s renowned collection.


Harold Holzer has written or edited more than 40 books on Lincoln and the Civil War era, including The Civil War in 50 Objects, the companion volume to a new rotating display at the New-York Historical Society. Eric Foner (moderator) is a Professor of History at Columbia University and a winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Bancroft Prize, Lincoln Prize, and many others.

Advance tickets may also be purchased on site at the New-York Historical Society admissions desk. Advance purchase is required to guarantee seating. All sales are final and payments cannot be refunded. Programs and dates may be subject to change. Management reserves the right to refuse admission to latecomers.
