American Republics: A Continental History of the United States, 1783–1850
The President Bill Clinton Lecture in American History
Alan Taylor, Eric Foner (moderator)
Tuesday, May 11, 2021 | 6 pm ET | $20 (Members, $10; Chairman’s Council, Free)

Presented LIVE on Zoom

In an illuminating discussion of a tumultuous period in the United States, historian Alan Taylor uncovers a formative America finding its footing in the wake of the Revolutionary War. This United States was much more fragile and divisive than the traditional story of a nation marching confidently towards becoming a major world power: it was a country in its infancy contending with European empires, the growing influence and power of slavery, bitter political party divisions, and systemic violence against Native peoples who sought to keep American settlers out of their homelands.

Alan Taylor is Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor of History at the University of Virginia and a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize in History. His latest book is American Republics: A Continental History of the United States, 1783-1850. Eric Foner (moderator) is DeWitt Clinton Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia University.
