A native of England, the subject came to America as a youth, and was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1892. In 1903 he was appointed vicar of Saint Agnes' Chapel, Trinity Church, New York, and five years later became rector of Trinity Church, an office he held for thirteen years. He was consecrated Episcopal bishop of New York in 1921. This portrait, which was painted from life in Lockman's New York studio, shows the subject in his robes of office.
