Gallery Label:
William Davis was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, the son of Moses and Hannah (Pierpont) Davis. An engraving on the back of the case indicates that this miniature was painted as a gift for Davis's second wife, Sally Smith, whom he married in 1800.
