William Coleman (1766-1829)
Watercolor on ivory
Overall: 2 x 1 1/2 in. ( 5.1 x 3.8 cm )
In this miniature Coleman appears to be in his mid-twenties, thus dating the piece between 1790 and 1794, before he settled permanently in New York. Not only is the miniature itself in the style of Ramage, but the gold frame is also. Ramage often made his own frames, which are characterized by fluted and chased edges. His workdesk and tools, including his goldsmithing instruments, are in the N-YHS collection.
