Wrought silver waste bowl; circular body with inverted, chased gadrooning on a circular pedestal foot; gadrooned foot with a horizontally applied scalloped footring; chased foliate band applied around the joint of the pedestal to the body; incurved shoulder with an applied, chased foliate band around the rim; engraved, "M J L S B" in bright-cut script on the center of the body; maker's marks stamped on the base.
This waste bowl was made for Mary Josepha Lydia Sterns Belknap (1771-1862), whose intitials are engraved on the body. She was the daughter of Captain Samuel Belknap, of Woburn, MA, and married Aaron Belknap of Newburgh, NY in 1811.
