The noted American poet was born in West Hills (now Huntington), Long Island, the son of Walter Whitman and Louisa (Van Velsor) Whitman. When he was four years old the family moved to Brooklyn. Whitman pursued a newspaper career and also taught school in rural Long Island. His slim volume of verse "Leaves of Grass," first published in 1855, was immediately acclaimed and has been described as the most influential single volume of verse in American literature.
