View of the Hudson River at West Point, New York
Watercolor, scratching out, white gouache, and selective glazing on paper, laid on card
Overall: 14 x 20 7/8 in. ( 35.6 x 53 cm )
This is a view south from the high ground behind Constitution Island toward Anthony's Nose and Bear Mountain. The river threads its way between high hills that rise from the banks. The buildings of the United States Military Academy appear on the level plain at the right, and on the summit of the nearby hill are the ruins of Fort Putnam. This watercolor was intended for the Hudson River Portfolio but was not included in the published work.
