View at Fort Clinton, McGown's Pass, New York City
Watercolor, black ink, and graphite on paper, laid on heavier paper
Overall (irregular): 22 7/8 × 30 3/4 in. (58.1 × 78.1 cm)
inscriptions: bottom center, ink:" View at Fort Clinton, McGowan's [sic] Pass"
Inscribed below image in brown ink: "View at Fort Clinton McGowan's[sic] Pass."; verso inscribed at lower left vertically: "N. 9."
A view looking east from Fort Clinton, which appears at the left, across the course of Benson's Creek and the marshes extending from the McGown's Pass area to the East River. In this and other watercolors of the Holland series the name McGown is incorrectly spelled "McGowan" on titles applied to the illustration. Edward Hagman Hall's McGown's Pass and Vicinity has an excellent map delineating the fortifications in northern Central Park with relation to modern streets and pathways.
