This view is squared off in sections and numbered as a preliminary study for Miller's finished oil of the same subject, dated 1884, which is also in the Society's collection (1949.4). The subject, itself, was from a drawing made earlier by Miller and published as a woodcut in Holden's Dollar Magazine, July 1849.
