Tin, cotton, pewter, iron, and wood canteen; oblate, circular tin body with cylindrical pewter mouthpiece and cork stopper capped with iron ring that fastens with iron chain to tin loop on right side of canteen, and white canvas strap that runs through loops at side and bottom.
According to accession records, this canteen was carried during the Civil War by the donor's father, John Park Haynes, a sergeant in Company F of the 51st Regiment, Massachusetts Militia Volunteers.
