The naturalist William Bartram (1739-1823) of Philadelphia is commemorated in the Latin taxonomic named for this genus.
The background flora has been identified as Toadshade (Trillium sessile) or Little sweet betsy (Trillium cuneatum); Havell plate filled in the snail and landscape more boldly
