Lambdin, one of the leading portrait painters in Philadelphia from 1840 to 1870, painted the portraits of Generals Burnside, Rosecrans, Buell, Meade, and Reynolds during the years of the Civil War. In 1868, the year Grant was elected president, he painted this portrait from life.
