This view shows the exterior of the fortifications. Fort Clinton is on the hill at the extreme left and Nutter's battery in the center, with the blockhouse over the Barrier Gate on the line of entrenchments between these two defensive points. Fort Fish is on the hill at the right. The artist is either Captain James Renwick, Lieutenant James Gadsden, Lieutenant Isaac E. Craig, Lieutenant Daniel Turner, Lieutenant Lewis Gustavus De Russy, Lieutenant Kemble, or Lieutenant Oothout.
