Rossiter joined A. B. Durand, John F. Kensett, and J. W. Casilear on a study-tour of Europe in 1840. During this trip, Rossiter and Durand spent about seven weeks together in London before Durand left for Paris in mid-August. This drawing was presumably made in July or early August of that year.
