Silver medal struck for the American Numismatic Society and The New-York Historical Society to commemorate the purchase of Manhattan Island; obverse depicts two allegorical figures representing the intellectual and commercial progress of Manhattan, with the skyline in the distance and legend "NEW YORK CITY 1926"; reverse depicts group of Indians bartering with the Governor; in the background are sails and part of the hull of a Dutch ship; the whole surrounded by a string of wampum, with legend "1626" and in exergue "MANHATTAN".
Commemorating the tercentenary of the purchase of Manhattan Island, this medal was jointly issued by the American Numismatic Society and the New-York Historical Society in 1926.
