Black or dark blue wool Naval officer's double-breasted tailcoat; markings of epaulette attachments at the shoulders (epauletts missing); closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye) trimmed around the outside edge with gilt lacing and lined with dark blue velvet; 9 buttons down each side of the front, sleeves trimmed with 3 bands of gilt lacing against red ground; 4 panels on the back of the bodice, with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, 2 buttons at the bottom of the tails; bodice lined with black twill-weave silk, breast lightly padded and quilted, slant slit pocket at the left breast lined with white linen, tails lined with white silk, with a horizontal slit pocket at the top of the right tail; all buttons cast with a spread each perched on an anchor encircled by 8 stars.
This tailcoat was worn by Naval Chief-Engineer William Leonard Nicoll (1842-1887). The Society also owns the other pieces of this uniform, as well as other articles worn by Nicoll.
