Sword with curved, single-edged steel blade; steel stirrup hilt with reverse P-type knuckle-bow, narrow counter-guard, and quillon with disk finial; grip covered with leather and wrapped with wire; bird's head pommel with backstrap extending to narrow ferrule at base of grip; leather scabbard with steel throat with hole pierced at center on obverse (missing frog stud and tip).
This sword is described in the accession records as a "U.S. dragoon saber [of] German type." This identification is based on illustrations in Smithsonian Institution Bulletin No. 163 (p. 34).
