Sword with curved, single-edged steel blade with broad fuller; steel stirrup hilt with reverse P-type knuckle-bow, simple langets on obverse and reverse and curved quillon with cylindrical terminal; wooden grip covered in leather and wrapped with wire; steel scabbard with two carrying rings and drag.
This sword, identified as a "U.S. Dragoon saber of German type" in the accession records, and four others donated by Mrs. Augustus Van Horne Ellis were used in the Battle of Gettysburg by members of the Ellis family: Colonel Augustus Van Horne Ellis and Julius Livingston Ellis, who were killed in the battle, John Stoneacre Ellis, Henry Ashfield Ellis, and Samuel Claudius Ellis.
