Steel, silver, bone
Overall: 38 1/8 x 3 1/2 x 2 3/4 in. ( 96.8 x 8.9 x 7 cm )
Sword with straight, single-edged steel blade with two fullers, one full-length and one extending from hilt to within 7 inches of point; silver half-basket hilt with scroll and circle motifs; four-sided bone grip with carved ridges and grooves wrapped with twisted wire and narrow strips of metal; pierced ball pommel.
According to the donor, this sword was taken from British General John Burgoyne (1722-1792) by American General Horatio Gates (1729-1806) at Saratoga in 1777. However, this quality and design of this sword is not consistent with that of a General.
