Description:
Saber with curved, single-edged steel blade with two fullers, one broad and one narrow; brass half-basket hilt with two branches on obverse side; wooden grip originally covered in leather and wrapped with twisted wire (tiny remnants of leather and wire survive); helmet-shaped brass pommel without surface decoration.

According to the accession records, this saber was found near Richmond, Virginia, at the site of the Battle of Fair Oaks (or Seven Pines), which took place May 31-June 1, 1862. It was presented to the 7th Regiment, National Guard New York, by Henry W. Utter of Company H.
