STS, Surface Transportation System, represents the Surface Transportation Corporation, a bus-operating subsidiary of the Third Avenue Railway System (TARS). As buses gradually replaced streetcars in the 1940’s TARS operated buses in Manhattan and the Bronx. The Surface Transportation Corporation was dissolved as a corporation in 1956 when the Third Avenue Railway System was sold to New York City Omnibus Corporation.
This badge belonged to a bus driver, likely for display on their uniform cap.
