Surface Transportation System Badge from the Metropolitan Transit Authority
Cast brass badge, decorated in enameled bas-relief; two threaded posts with nuts on back at center and bottom for attachment; on face in central medallion, intertwined monogram: STS; red enameled circle with brass letters "SURFACE. / TRANSPORTATION. SYSTEM."; below in black enamel letters: "3313 / OPERATOR"
STS, Surface Transportation System, represents the Surface Transportation Corporation, a bus-operating subsidiary of the Third Avenue Railway System (TARS). As buses gradually replaced streetcars in the 1940’s TARS operated buses in Manhattan and the Bronx. The Surface Transportation Corporation was dissolved as a corporation in 1956 when the Third Avenue Railway System was sold to New York City Omnibus Corporation.
This badge belonged to a bus driver, likely for display on their uniform cap.
