This watercolor is one of Harvey's different epochs of the day, ca. 1830s-40s. A clue to its date of execution is suggested by the fact that the first interment in Greenwood Cemetery was in 1840. The cemetery and Flatbush are now both in the borough of Brooklyn, with the cemetery of 478 acres occupying the highest elevation. Harvey's view was taken from Ocean Hill in the cemetery and looks toward the Atlantic Ocean.
