A free study in reverse of dancing figures for the painting "Carmen Jones," based on the musical by Oscar Hammerstein the II, first performed in New York City in 1943.
The drawing was a gift from the artist to Edward Dudley Hume Johnson for Easter. It is a study in reverse for the oil on canvas painting in the collection (2001.102). Another drawing of a single figure in the collection is also related to the painting (2001.103).
