Gold wire-frame spectacles with oval bifocal lenses connected by "C" bridge; gold wire temples which loop over ears and have bulbous ends.

Benjamin Franklin is credited with inventing bifocals, which combine two corrective prescriptions in one lens. Although Franklin experimented with bifocals in the late 18th century, bifocals were not common until the early 20th century.
