Social welfare reformer and journalist Sophie Irene Simon was born in Rovno, Russia, but was brought to the United States at the age of six. In 1896 she was married to Anselm Loeb, whom she later divorced. She began her newspaper career as a reporter on the New York "Evening World" in 1911. She was a crusader for the rights of widows and children and the author of several books.
