Sketchbook
This sketchbook includes drawings from Durand's September 1835 expedition to Pine Orchard, where the Catskill Mountain House was located, and his visits to the nearby picturesque sites including Kaaterskill Falls. He sketched the falls from the base, looking up to emphasize the height and drama of the water plunging down the rocky gorge. Durand also included the viewing station at the summit, testifying to the popularity of the falls as a destination for visitors to the famous resort hotel nearby.
