Mahogany Federal klismos-style chair; scroll back with veneered crest rail fitted over stiles; horizontal splat composed of carved scrolls with concentric circles in relief and carved fans beneath; saber-shaped front legs and back swept rear legs.
This chair belonged to the donor's ancestor Samuel McCulloh, who was born in Ireland and trained as a physician. McCulloh came to the U.S. before 1810 and served in the Navy during the War of 1812. He owned an estate, Rockland, outside of Baltimore, and clipper ships that carried cargo back and forth between the U.S. and parts of Asia.
