Description:
Maple Shaker side chair with tilting balls installed in sockets in the base of rear legs; ladder back with three slats and round stiles with acorn-shaped finials; trapezoidal cane seat; turned legs tapering slighly at bottom with two rounded stretchers in front and at either side, and one rounded stretcher in back.

Chairmaking was a major industry of the Shakers. Many Shaker chairs have the added feature of buttons or "balls" fitted into a socket at the base of the rear legs, which added comfort by allowing the sitter to tilt the chair slightly.
