These cavalry shoulder loops were taken off the jacket of Major General Stephen D. Ramseur. Ramseur was wounded and captured by Sheridan in the Battle of Winchester, and was commanding infantry at the time of his death. This information comes from both a letter found with the loops dated Oct. 22, 1864, from J. Y Culyer, the chief clerk of the U.S. Sanitation Commission, and military uniform historian Bruce Bazelon (1988).
