U.S. frigate "Congress", painted wood model of frigate with three masts and complete rigging.
The original U.S. frigate, Congress, was made at Portsmouth, N.H., 1839-1841, and was beached and burned during the fight with the Merrimac in Hampton Roads, Va., March 8, 1962. This model was made by a sailor who served on board the Congress and it was offered for sale at a fair during the Civil War for the benefit of wounded Union soldiers and sailors.
