Eight struck aluminum medals commemorating eight principal battles of the American Revolution of 1776; obverse of all eight examples shows Washington's nude bust facing right, surrounded by stars and legend within beaded border: "1876/THE CENTENNIAL YEAR OF OUR NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE." Reverse of medals has similar design of eight-pointed star at center with date "1776" and laurel wreath and beaded border around legend; legends on medals are: 1. "1/FEBRUARY 27/NO.CAROLINA/BATTLE OF MOORE'S CREEK BRIDGE"; 2. "2/JUNE 28/SO.CAROLINA/BATTLE OF SULLIVAN'S ISLAND"; 3. "3/AUGUST 27/NEW YORK/BATTLE OF LONG ISLAND"; 4. "4/SEPTEMBER 16/NEW YORK/BATTLE OF HARLEM PLAINS"; 5. "5/OCTOBER 11& 12/NEW YORK/BATTLE OF LAKE CHAMPLAIN"; 6. "6/OCTOBER 28/NEW YORK/BATTLE OF WHITE PLAINS"; 7. 7/NOVEMBER 16/NEW YORK/NOVEMBER 16"; 8. "8/DECEMBER 26/NEW JERSEY/BATTLE OF TRENTON." Hand-written note on lined buff paper on inside of lid: "N.B. Do not touch the surface of the medals. [double underlined]/Set of Medals designed and struck/ by Mr. George H. Lovett of N.Y. in/Centennial Commemoration of the/eight principal battles of the Amer/ican Revolution occurring during the/year 1776./Presd. to the "N.Y.Historical Society"/by Isaac F. Wood; 1878. May 18." Retangular typed label reads: "Set of medals commemorating the/eight principal battles of the/American Revolution fought in 1776." Faded rectangular fitted burgundy case with royal blue silk sating lining.
