Gold and enamel eight-pointed Maltese cross suspended from a laurel wreath, with the image of Saint Gregory in the central medallion.
The Papal Order of Saint Gregory the Great was created in 1831, and has had civil and military divisions since 1834; it was reformed in 1905 along with all the other Papal Orders. It is awarded for conspicuous service to the Church and society, with out regard for religious allegiance. This badge is a civil division award, because its cross is suspended from a green enamel laurel wreath (the military division's cross hangs from a trophy of arms).
