Description: 
Copper-colored velvet sash with satin lining; passementerie adorns both ends.
Gallery Label: 
This sash was part of DeWitt Clinton's (1769-1828) Freemason's costume. He was the grandson of Governor George Clinton (1739-1812) and served as his secretary after graduating from Columbia College. He served three terms as mayor of New York City from 1803-1815, during which time he organized a public school system. He was governor of New York from 1817-1822 and 1825-1828. He was also the third president of the New-York Historical Society from 1817-1819.
