The subject, a native of Lynchburg, Va., received his law degree from Columbia in 1878 and became a partner in Guggenheim and Untermyer, New York. He was a successful trial lawyer, corporation consultant, and advisor to the federal government. In addition, he served as vice-president of the American Jewish Congress and as president of the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League to Champion Human Rights which was organized in Amsterdam in 1934. His home was Greystone, an estate on the Hudson River.
