Cast and wrought silver presentation salver; circular tray with raised sides, and a beaded band around the molded rim; medallion in the center engraved, "PRESENTED/ TO/ John S. Ellis/ by the attachés of the/ SHRIEVALTY OF SAN FRANSISCO/ UPON/ his retirement from office./ June 1st 1864." in script and gothic script; center medallion surrounded by four smaller medallions with engraved vignettes, soldiers shooting a cannon, a building, aerial view of a military base and a fort on the water with mountains in the background; scroll decoration around the medallions; three cast shell and scroll feet applied to the base; makers' marks stamped on the base.
