The subject was the third son of Lewis Morris and Tryntje (Staats) Morris and the half-brother of Gouverneur Morris. He served as a New York State senator from 1778 to 1780, and in 1779 was appointed chief justice of the state supreme court. This profile portrait, a gift to the Society from the subject's great-great-grandson, was obtained with the aid of the physionotrace machine, probably when Saint-Mémin was active in New York (1796-98).
