The subject, a native of Cortland, N.Y., entered journalism as a young man and from 1914 to 1917 was war correspondent in Berlin and Paris for the Chicago "Daily News." In the 1930s he attracted a following of millions through his low-keyed presentation of the news over British, American, and Canadian radio networks.
