Actress Beatrice Lillie was born in Toronto, Canada, and made her first stage appearance in London in 1914. After her American debut in 1924, she appeared often on the New York stage. She was in the New York production of Noel Coward's "This Year of Grace" in 1928, the year this portrait was made.
