The subject, a Danish-born operatic tenor, performed with New York's Metropolitan Opera Co. from 1925 to 1950. Martin Mayer describes him as "the second most important tenor of the [20th] century, yielding pride of place only to Caruso," in "The Met: One Hundred Years of Grand Opera" (New York, 1983).
