The eldest son of John and Elizabeth (Palmer) Cox, the subject of this portrait lived in the vicinity of Katsbaan, Ulster County, New York, from 1776 until 1790, when he bought a farm in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County. The portrait was a gift to the Society from his great-granddaughter.
