In 1897, against the advice of family and friends, Curtis bought the failing "Saturday Evening Post" for $1,000. Undaunted, he continued to put money into the ailing magazine. After hiring George Horace Lorimer as editor in 1898, his perseverance was finally rewarded as the publication began to thrive, in time becoming one of the most prestigious in the country.
