The 1952 portable sewing machine was owned by the donor's mother-in-law, Kathryn Vislocky Gallagher (1918-1985). By the time the donor met her in the mid-1960s, the sewing machine was a fixture in her house, where it was kept out and at the ready on a small table. The elder Mrs. Gallagher loved to purchase McCall's dress patterns as well as fabric and buttons from the many small stores on the Lower East Side.
