Celluloid, metal, paper
1/8 x 7/8 in. diameter
A beige pinback button printed with a state seal, crest, symbol or motto from U.S. states and territories; marked "Massachusetts", with a gold shield topped by an arm and hammer, around a Native American with a tall headdress holding a bow and arrows over a red banner in Latin "Ense Petit Placidam Sub Libertate Quietem". Part of a series of pre-World War I United States state buttons; some of the region names are no longer current. The reverse is printed "Sweet Caporal Cigarette", indicating that this button was part of a series of collectible premiums given by tobacco and gum manufacturers.
