Pinback button

Object Number:
Celluloid, metal, paper
1/8 x 7/8 in. diameter
A beige pinback button printed with a flag with narrow alternating orange and white stripes with a red, white and blue field in the upper corner, marked in black "Orange Free State". The Orange Free State was originally a Dutch South African Colony, becoming first a republic in 1904, then annexed as a province by the British in 1910, after the Boer War. Part of a series of pre-World War I flag buttons; many of the flags and country names are no longer current. The reverse is printed "Sweet Caporal Cigarette", indicating that this button was part of a series of collectible premiums given by tobacco and gum manufacturers.
