William Averell Harriman sought the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1952 but lost to Adlai E. Stevenson. He became Governor of New York in 1954, and in 1956 he atempted to run against Stevenson again but was unsuccessful. He ran for re-election as Governor but lost to Nelson D. Rockefeller in 1958.
