Soft, brimless bluish gray wool felt cap with a yellow band around lower edge, and gilded metal "A" pinned to front; black patent leather chin strap; light brown leather sweatband and black textile lining.

According to the accession records, this cap was worn as part of the uniform of Squadron A of the New York Hussars, organized ca. 1885 as an independent troop of cavalry (National Guard New York, 1889- ). The donor, who was a member of Squadron A, purchased his uniform at Brooks Brothers in New York City and wore it throughout his service, from 1899-1910. Other parts of his uniform are also in the N-YHS Collection.
