The subject, the second son of Major General Philip John Schuyler and Catherine (Van Rensselaer) Schuyler, was born in Albany. He resided in Rhinebeck from 1796 and represented that community in the New York State Assembly in 1798. He served as a colonel in the United States army during the War of 1812, and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1817. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his granddaughters.
