Wilson was born in Scotland, and studied at the University of Aberdeen. He immigrated to New York in 1763. A scholar of Greek and Latin, he taught at Columbia College from 1789-1792 and from 1797-1820, and served as acting president from 1800-1801. The original of this portrait by Samuel Waldo and William Jewett may have been painted in 1821 or early 1822, probably on the commission of Columbia College, which owns it.
