inscription: on back: "Peter Van. Schaack. L.L.D."
Born at Kinderhook, N.Y., the subject was the fourth son of Cornelius and Lydia (Van Dyck) Van Schaack. After being admitted to the bar in 1769 he established a successful law practice in New York. He sought refuge in England during the Revolution, but returned in 1785, was given citizenship, and continued his law practice at Kinderhook. This portrait was copied from a lost original by John Trumbull of ca. 1820-24, or the engraving thereof.
